{detailed description}During the immediate period before World War Two, the RAF modified its command structure to rationalise for rapid expansion. Bomber Command was divided into six operational groups, each operating a single type of aircraft. 3 Group had almost completely re-equipped with the Wellington by the 4th of September 1939 to carry out the second bombing operation of the war, which was against German warships off Brunsbüttel. On the 2nd of April 1940, two squadrons were temporarily transferred to Coastal Command and advanced bases in Northern Scotland. They had hardly settled in before the Germans invaded Denmark and Norway. The squadrons went into action immediately and on 11/12th April one of them, 115 Squadron, became the first RAF unit to bomb a mainland target (Stavanger/Sola airfield) in World War Two. In 1.940 the first of the new four-engined bombers, the Short Stirling, came into service with the Group, being followed in 1943 by the Avro Lancaster. On the 3/4th of November 1943, 3 Group played a leading part in the first operation by heavy bombers employing the radar bombing aid known as G-H. Throughout the summer of 1944 the Group participated in the side-by-side campaigns against railways, oil, flying bomb sites, while also operating in support of ground forces. From October 1944 to war's end 3 Group alone conducted G-H operations against urban and precision targets by both day and night. During the week ending 25th March 1945, Bomber Command made numerous attacks to prepare for the crossing of the Rhine. The final devastating blows before the crossing were delivered on the 23rd in two attacks on the little town of Wesel - which was the objective of the 1st Commando Brigade -the first attack, 100 per cent G-H, being delivered at 1530 hours by 77 Lancasters of 3 Group. In the month of March 1945 the Group despatched a record of 2,791 sorties.
