A Pictorial History of Northwest Airlines

Price: £9.00

Originally published in 1972 as "More Than Meets The Sky"

A Pictorial History of Northwest Airlines tells the colorful and adventurous history of the pioneer airline that began in 1926. This is the first book not only to reveal Northwest Airline's role in world air commerce from its first flight to the present time but also to document the human struggle and technology essential to the safe, fast, comfortable air travel of today.
Stephen Mills relates the historic memorabilia not only of noted pilots and famous airplanes, but of people—mechanics, groomers, dispatchers, and the many other specialists—that make an airline successful. He tells how Col. L. H. Brittin started the airline with borrowed airplanes, how early stunt and racing pilot Charles "Speed" Holman became Northwest's first operations manager, how and why pilot Mal Freeburg was awarded the first Congressional Air Mail Medal of Honor by President Roosevelt.
There are over 400 selected photographs, many published for the first time, of all the aircraft types, including the Ford "Tin Goose" trimotor, the dependable Lockheed "Electra," the old "workhorse" Douglas DC3, and the huge, admirable Boeing Stratocruisers. And as a special bonus, there is an index of all Northwest aircraft listed chronologically by FAA and company numbers.
Mills tells of the airline's multimission contribution to World War II victory, of its postwar expansion westward to Alaska, Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Formosa, Okinawa, the Philippines, and eastward to New York and Washington, D. C.
