Turning from the 'bomber country' covered by his two previous Action Stations volumes (numbers 2 and 4) on Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, 'Barry' Halpenny here devotes his attention to fighter territory. Biggin Hill, Henley and Hornchurch are the three names which probably spring most readily to mind out of this book's area, although modern air travellers will be equally interested in the histories of Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton. Other famous names to appear include Booker and Brooklands, Croydon, Detling and Eastchurch, Hatfield and Hendon, Kenley, Northolt and West Mailing, in addition to air defence headquarters such as High Wycombe and Uxbridge.
Covering both the Battle of Britain and the defence of London against the Blitz in depth, as well as later offensive cross-Channel operations, this latest addition to the Action Stations series will appeal not just to historians and aficionados but to anyone with an interest in those dark and dangerous days nearly half a century ago.
