Despite the ravages of time and an increasing scarcity of aviation fuel in many parts of the world, the classic airliners and transportation aircraft of the pistoned engined era continue to provide exceptional service. The majority of the aircraft featured in this book remain airworthy today.
The Douglas DC-3, DC-6, Lockheed Constellation and even a close relative of the Boeing Stratocruiser are operated on a network of mostly all-freight operations in countries such as Bolivia, Colombia, Alaska, Ethiopia and the Caribbean. These aircraft are able to fly in and out of primitive airfields, in some cases deep in the heart of steamy jungles, where the use of modern jet equipment would be totally impractical. Aircraft such as. the Boeing 737 short-to-medium range jetliner are perfectly at home in your average airport but are not as practical (or as cheap) as the classic Douglas DC-3.

This remarkable book brings together the work of some of aviations most notable photographers; the late Stephen Piercey, Austin J. Brown, Mark R. Wagner, David Oliver, Karl-Heinz Morawietz, Philip Wallick and Jörg Weier – all of whom traveled extensively, often flying in these venerable machines on the proverbial `wing and a prayer' to obtain the dramatic photographs featured on the next 240 pages.
