sadly, flyingbooks is now closed.

{detailed description}Not just another 'what I did in the war' book though the author's experiences as Intelligence Officer with some of the less glamorous of the RAF's bomber squadrons are well told and will be of enormous interest to many ex-aircrew and historians alike. Sqn Ldr Jones served with 103 Squadron at Elsham Wolds with Halifaxes, 166 Squadron at Kirmington with Wellingtons and Lancasters, 150 Squadron at Fiskerton, and 150 170 Squadrons at Hemswell also with Lancasters, and was lucky enough to fly on several operational missions. Setting this book apart from the usual are the special chapters explaining clearly many aspects of bomber work which have so far remained unaired:

Night Photography
The Role of the Intelligence Officer
Decoys, Dummies, Aerial Phenomena
Target Marking Techniques
Radio and Radar Countermeasures

Detailed appendices provide a Summary of Bombing Operations; Recorded Aircraft Losses for the squadrons while the author served with them; Brief Squadron Histories for 103, 150, 166 and 170 Squadrons; Aircraft Fuel and Bomb Load data; and a Glossary of technical terms, abbreviations and RAF jargon.
The book is illustrated with thirty-one photographs covering the aircraft, personalities, weapons preparation, night bombing photographs and particularly interesting interiors of the Operations Rooms and Intelligence Libraries plus thirteen line drawings depicting various aspects of countermeasures, sea-mining, strike photography etc.
