{detailed description}This is by far the most detailed, comprehensive and authentic work on this subject, containing almost every noteworthy fact ever recorded about the British aeroplanes of the 1914-18 War. Nothing else like it exists anywhere, even in official archives.
The book contains the fullest possible descriptions of 286 basic types of aircraft, both operational and experimental, with details of all known variants thereof. All operational types receive the same generous treatment as those described in the author's series of articles published in Flight magazine, but the specifications of the aircraft are more complete than any hitherto published. There are copious details (including many large tables) of performance figures, service use, armament, production, contractors, contract numbers, serial numbers, and notes on individual machines — even for the less well-known types. Many of the experimental aircraft are described in similar detail, and much valuable information about the aeroengines of the period is included.
Long, comprehensive narratives deal with the development, use, and operational history of the aircraft; and the 712 illustrations include scores of rare photographs which have never been published before.
