In less than six years the Fleet Air Arm grew from a small force, limited in numbers, manpower and material, to a powerful strategic weapon as large as the prewar Royal Air Force in terms of effective front-line aircraft. Conceived and initially employed as an extension of the big guns of the Fleet, naval aviation was developed to the point where the aircraft carrier became the vital ship in any formation, offensive or defensive.
Carrier-based aircraft supported every major amphibious operation from the landings in Norway in April 1940 right through to the re-occupation of Singapore in September 1945, with the sole exception of Dunkirk. Complemented by many action photographs, this book tells the story of operations taken part in by the carrier-borne aircraft, including the difficulties experienced with aircraft equipment, and the expansion of the Fleet Air Arm.
