Spitfire, Lancaster, Mustang, Mosquito, Fortress — the great glamour names of World War 2 aircraft. Some, of course, can still be seen: some even fly — but only as carefully preserved specimens cavorting like over-age ballet dancers in front of the air show crowds.
Out-serving them all and still working in 60 air forces throughout the world — to say nothing of as many civil operators — is the C-47 Dakota. You may, it has been said, wreck a Dakota but you will never wear one out.
This book, written by one of the world's foremost authorities on the type, is an evocation of the Dakota as an aircraft at war. It tells the story of an airliner that was invented for peace and, like so many of its human contemporaries, went reluctantly to war only to find unthought of and unsought distinction in a variety of unheard of roles from glider tug to gunship. Abundantly illustrated with rare photographs, Dakota at War is also illuminated by a host of stories from men who flew the Dakota in the RAF, the USAAF, the USN, the Commonwealth air forces and a whole spectrum of roles and theatres during World War 2, Korea, the Malaysian 'confrontation' and Vietnam.
