Finnair, founded in 1923 under the name Aero O/Y, is the sixth oldest scheduled airline still operating today. With its evolvement closely linked to the modern history of Finland, the airline has triumphed over trials and tribulations and celebrates its diamond jubilee year as one of Europe's most successful airlines.
This lavishly produced book tells the fascinating story of Finnair through a lively and informative text complemented by an evocative and profuse pictorial account. Particular care has been taken to gather an unparalled collection of over 450 photographs, posters, advertisements, and other documentary material — the majority published for the first time — to recreate the atmosphere of the periods described. Each chapter also features specially commissioned finely detailed aircraft side-view drawings and maps.
Complete coverage is obtained by the inclusion of a chronology and a series of appendices, reflecting extensive and meticulous research, which accurately detail the historical status of Finnair, its fleet, and its city service record. The aircraft fleet appendix is unique in illustrating each of the aircraft that Finnair, and its subsidiary companies, Karair and Finnaviation, have operated on scheduled services over the past six decades.
The undisputed definitive work on the subject, John Wegg has, in the words of Finnair's President, Gunnar Korhonen, 'made a valuable contribution to the literature of our industry'.
