Conceived and designed by the brilliant Kurt Tank in 1937, the FockeWulf Fw190 entered service with the Luftwaffe in 1941 where it displayed immediately its superiority to the Spitfire V. In the following three years over 13 main series and numerous variants were developed to keep pace with Allied developments and to fulfil a host of operational requirements. Amongst these the main service version, the Fw190D-9, armed with two cannon and two machine guns, and with a top speed of 426mph, is generally regarded as Germany's best piston engined fighter.
Focke-Wulf Fw190 & Ta152 - Aircraft & Legend is the second in a series originally published in German and written by the leading German aviation historian, Heinz Nowarra. In it is chronicled the full history of this brutal-looking and effective fighter from conception and prototype development, to the production of the Ta152 which reached operational status shortly before the end of the war.
The author looks in detail at every one of the variants including many of those that got no further than the drawing board. Every permutation of armament fit is discussed, as are the many engine variations both actual and intended.
In addition to the main text comprehensive appendices are provided, recording the evolution of the Fw190 mark-by-mark, specifications of selected variants, and equipment details.
The text is accompanied by over 250 photographs and line drawings showing in detail the diversity of combat roles, operational types and paper projects.
