{detailed description}No. 8 in the World War Two Photo Album Series.

Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's fateful invasion of Russia! In 1941 the Luftwaffe took on an air force twice its own size and, on June 22, destroyed 1,811 Soviet aircraft for the loss of only 35. However, it was not possible to prevent the Russians from replacing these losses and it soon became clear that Germany had bitten off more than she could chew. Faced by appalling weather conditions, crippling shortages of men and materials, the lack of a strategic bombing policy and Hitler's interference in military affairs, the invasion eventually failed. Using unique pictorial material the author traces the course of the campaign from the German point of view. The story he tells is one of quite remarkable bravery in the face of overwhelming odds.
Each of the photographs has been specially selected for freshness and originality as well as quality and the result is a superb record of one of the major campaigns of World War 2. In addition there is an introduction by the well-known aviation author Bryan Philpott which outlines the course of the campaign and describes vividly the sheer size of the task which the Germans undertook. There are also appendices giving useful information about aircraft types.
