{detailed description}No.13 in the World War Two Photo Album Series.

German bombers achieved many of their greatest successes in the Mediterranean theatre of operations, particularly against Allied shipping during the air drop on Crete and the Malta convoys. Although Germany lacked a proper strategic bomber or even a strategic bombing policy, it was here, with the relatively short distances involved, that they came closest to the ideal. Heinkel He111s, Junkers Ju 88s, Ju 87 Stukas, escorted by Bf 109s and 110s, inflicted significant damage on harbours, airfields and fortifications as well as ships and tactical targets. However, as in other theatres, growing Allied aerial supremacy was eventually to negate the courage of the bomber crews as the Axis star waned. This book is a unique pictorial record of the Luftwaffe men and machines who gave the Allies such a headache during the period 1940-42 in particular. The photographs, which illustrate all the most prevalent aircraft types, have been specially selected from official German archives—the majority never before published. Each is accompanied by an authoritative caption which points out salient details and markings of inestimable value to model makers. There is also an introduction to the campaign by well-known aviation author Bryan Philpott, a map of the area and appendices listing units and aircraft types present.
