The years 1945-1965 were amongst the most exciting in the history of civil aviation. It was an era which saw the growth of civil aviation from the days of converted wartime bombers and
transports to major carriers operating modern, purpose-built jets and turboprops.
It began at a time of graceful piston engined airliners and small airlines struggling to make a living with a handful of semi-obsolete aircraft. Many of these companies failed to survive for more than a year or two, but others prospered and went on to become major influences in the air transport industry.
Golden Age tells the story of their struggle and it is a story that encompasses the whole of the United Kingdom. It features many airfields around the country, some of which were at one time major commercial airports but have since been relegated to less prestigious flying activities or to just fond memories, to others such as Heathrow which have gone from strength to strength.
Charles Woodley has written an evocative account of these years which will bring back many memories for those who remember the period and will be a valuable source of reference for today's enthusiasts. Included in the book are many previously unpublished photographs.
