{detailed description}The 85 year history of No. 25 (Fighter) Squadron R. A. F.
No.25 Squadron RAF originally formed at Montrose in Scotland on 25th September 1915, moving to France with F.E.2bs in February 1916 for fighter and reconnaissance work. These were replaced in 1917 with D.H.4s, and post-war some D.H.9s arrived. It disbanded at Scopwick on 31st January 1920 but reformed next day at Hawkinge as a fighter squadron with Snipes, which it took to Turkey in 1922/23. Gaining a high standard, it successively re-equipped with Grebes, Siskins, Furies, Demons, Gladiators and Blenheims, becoming a night fighter squadron in 1939. During the war it flew Blenheims, Beaufighters, a few Havocs and then the various marks of Mosquito, these giving way post-war to Vampires, Meteors and then Javelins for all-weather work. Disbanded for only the second time on 1st July 1958, it was immediately reformed at North Coates as a Bloodhound surface-to-air missile unit. It spent some years in Germany before returning to the UK, eventually to disband on 2nd July 1989. Again, it was immediately reformed with Tornados as a fighter squadron at Leeming where it remains, being the RAF squadron with the longest continuous length of service.
