{detailed description}The helicopter has been described, most aptly, as 'the toy that grew up'. Indeed, it began quite literally as a toy, for the first really successful helicopter was a model made by two Frenchmen as long ago as 1784. Appropriately, it was also in France that the first full-size man-carrying helicopters appeared in 1907, and French and German designs of the mid-'thirties paved the way for the first fully practical helicopter, the Sikorsky VS-300.
Since then the heliopter has grown up rapidly, and today the list of activities undertaken by this most versatile of vehicles is almost endless. Military use on a limited scale during World War 2, followed by a much fuller realisation of its capabilities in Korea in 1950-55, has now expanded to the point where it is the principal workhorse of the war in Vietnam.
Commercially, too, it has grown up, especially since the advent of gas turbine power made the operation of large passenger-carrying helicopters economically viable. In size, modern helicopters range from the diminutive 13-foot Sky-Trac to the gigantic Russian Mi-12 which can carry a payload of 88,636 lb (40,205 kg).
Nor must we forget the autogyro, which preceded the pure helicopter in the 'twenties and 'thirties and is currently enjoying renewed popularity, especially among private owners.
This unique volume covers the development of rotorcraft from the first primitive, exploratory machines to the latest, fastest helicopters in world-wide service today, with 94 representative types illustrated for the first time by full-colour general arrangement drawings showing each in the markings of a typical operator.
