How to Fly the B-29 Superfortress reproduces exactly the original USAAF XXI Bomber Command crew manual, written by and for combat crews of World War II and drawing upon their first-hand knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the plane. The detail is such that this book contains all the information needed to make the B29 an effective combat weapon.
Great things were expected of the B-29 Superfortress when it first came into use, but it failed initially to live up to demands. It provided a formidable strategic bombing capability, but did not hit the targets often enough. The problem was that while the training of Superfortress crews in the USA was thorough, what they really needed was a complete guide to every possible scenario and hitch that could occur, and the way to deal with it. This realisation was the starting point for the production of this manual.
Comprehensive sections of the manual cover training and planning; all the information needed by the airplane commander, flight engineer and radar operator; and the details of radio procedure, combat navigation, bombing and gunnery, flying equipment, emergency procedures, first aid and intelligence. Going far beyond the earlier 'pilot's handbook', How to Fly the B-29 Superfortress gives the clearest possible insight into war from the perspective of each crewmember on board.
