{detailed description}On March 3rd 1945, two months before Germany's surrender, the greatest force of German night intruders ever assembled took off from their bases in Germany. Code named 'Gisela' and cloaked in secrecy, this mission was the largest single operation of its type ever executed.
142 Ju 88G-6 night fighters crossed the North Sea to join battle with the aircraft of Bomber Command in the dark skies over Britain. In two-and-a-half hours, thirteen Halifaxes, nine Lancasters, a Fortress and a Mosquito were destroyed.
Sounding somewhat like the plot for a work of fiction, this was the climax of German intruder operations.
Intruders over Britain details the hitherto untold history of the Luftwaffe's night intruder force, the Fernnachtjager. The story details: the nights of 1940, when the first Ju 88 night fighters flew over Britain; the lull due to Hitler's controversial decision to halt the operations; the occasion in 1944 when twelve US 8th Air Force B-24s were destroyed in one night; the climax of 'Operation Gisela.'
Many first-hand accounts from those who flew with the Allies and with the Luftwaffe, combined with the most detailed appendices, provide a definitive history of Intruders over Britain.
