{detailed description}Published only eight months before the outbreak of war in Europe, and before Govern-merit censorship prevented, until 1945, the publication of much important information, this issue of Jane reflects the state of the aviation industry and the air power of the nations on the eve of a conflict in which the aircraft became a decisive instrument of warfare. It contrasts the respective success and failure of nationalisation of the industry in Germany and France, and illustrates the pattern of type reduction and standardisation when there was an increasing emphasis on production-line manufacturing. Names like Dornier and Heinkel, Hurricane and Spitfire recall the Battle of Britain, and Wellington the dambuster raid. But a glance at the editorial pages show how ill-prepared some countries were for war. Pearl Harbor was to be attacked three years later; Japan had not released details of her `Zeros'; nor had North America started production of the Mitchell B-25 that raided Tokyo or that marvellous series of Mustangs flown by so many American pilots.
Less dramatic but still important was the growth of civil aviation shown on these pages, especially in the United States. Aero-engines were changing rapidly and the airship had all but disappeared from the scene.
