{detailed description}Gliding is currently one of the fastest growing leisure sports in the world, with increasing numbers of people discovering that silent, engineless flight does not necessarily mean frustrating durationless flight; and discovering also that in gliding they can be involved in one of the most keenly competitive of participation sports. Many of the sailplanes described in this book are world record holders and it might surprise some people to learn that sheer time aloft no longer qualifies for international recognition, excellence nowadays being measured, for instance, by speed over a given distance, absolute altitude reached or goal flight achieved. Not all gliding is competitive, of course, and many people fly simply for the pleasure of it all. Their aircraft tend to be less aerodynamically advanced and usually more spartan in their equipment; these gliders form the bulk of the more than 170 types described between the covers of this book. Drawn from nineteen nations. they embrace historic pre-war gliders as well as a number of experimental 'one-off' and home-built designs. Also included are a number of motor gliders, a breed of aircraft that has evolved through the need to dispense with the ground-crew and launching aids necessary for conventional glider operations.
Each entry consists of short description, table of data and both a specially-prepared three-view drawing and a photograph. Compiled with the co-operation of Jane's All the World's Aircraft, this book is the most comprehensive and authoritative compendium of sailplanes currently available.
