{detailed description}Undoubtedly the most versatile German aircraft of World War 2, the Junkers Ju 88 served as a fighter, bomber and patrol aircraft on every front on which the Luftwaffe fought. However, it was designed primarily as a fast medium-bomber, entering service just as the tanks rolled across the border into Poland at the very start of the war. Blooded in action during the ensuing months of 'Phoney War' in the West, the Ju 88 soon proved to be a formidable opponent for the beleaguered Allied air forces. It played a key role in the Battle of Britain, and the night Blitz which followed. Indeed, the Ju 88, and its replacement the Ju 188, continued to venture across the Channel in ever-dwindling numbers up until 1944. As the first of three volumes devoted exclusively to covering the extensive wartime service of the Junkers bomber, this book details the aircraft's many campaigns on the Western Front through to VE-Day.
