{detailed description}The Lend-Lease Bill was signed by President Roosevelt on 11 March 1941. It provided for the supply to overseas nations, including the British Commonwealth — on loan, transfer or sale — of US war material considered to be vital in the interest of American defence. On 7 December 1941 the Japanese made a surprise attack on the US Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and declared war on the USA and the United Kingdom. Three days later the USA declared war on Germany and Italy.
Commencing with large British Purchasing Commission cash orders, strengthened by orders taken over from European Allies overrun by Germany, and merging into massive Lend-Lease orders, over seventy different types of US aircraft were destined to reach the Allies. Many crossed the Atlantic to the UK, others to the Middle East, whilst a number went to the Pacific theatre of operations. In the early days of the war many aircraft were lost at sea in convoys attacked by U-boats, but as the air convoys became organised, so losses were reduced.
For the first time full details of UK Lend-Lease contracts for aircraft are revealed, as is an insight into the massive organisation necessary to fly the war machines to the battle fronts. Lend-Lease was a vital weapon for victory. Included are the stories of the ferry pilots, the ferry routes they flew and the aircraft involved. The book includes a complete check-list of all aircraft types supplied under the scheme throughout the war.
