On September 25th 1940 a huge force of German aircraft—Heinkel bombers and long-range Messerschmitt fighters —successfully penetrated British defences and executed a daring and devastating attack on the factory complex of the Bristol Aeroplane Company at Filton near Bristol. Two days later on September 27th, another attack on the Bristol area was routed over Filton by the Spitfire and Hurricane pilots of four RAF fighter squadrons.
Within forty-eight hours the Luftwaffe had attacked twice. The first was a resounding success, the second a complete disaster for them.
In this detailed reconstruction and analysis of the raids, Kenneth Wakefield settles most, if not all, of the controversies which have for many years surrounded them, and attributes the Luftwaffe's initial success to one of the rare occasions when Fighter Command was found wanting. Scrupulously researched over a period of more than twenty years, drawing on hitherto unused German sources and profusely illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs, this book provides both a study of the extremes of success and failure experienced by the Luftwaffe, and an intriguing insight into German fighter and bomber tactics employed during a critical phase of the Battle of Britain.
