{detailed description}The BAC Lightning will go down in history as a classic fighter and as the first and only truly supersonic aircraft fully developed by Britain on her own. Received with enthusiasm by pilots and with more reserve by politicians, its story covers nearly 30 years and the best part may still be to come.
Conceived shortly after the end of World War II, the Lightning's advanced design became a firm prototype contract in 1949. Development, however, was not to be straightforward for it called for a massive investment in the technology of supersonic flying at the very time that the Conservative Government of the day was issuing a White Paper forecasting the end of manned aircraft and their replacement by missiles.
Following the highly successful Modern Combat Aircraft format, Arthur Reed, air correspondent of The Times, covers in detail all stages of Lightning development and deployment. With over 120 photographs, numerous line drawings, personal accounts by the men closest to the section — like Roland Beamont the chief test pilot -- and detailed production and variant sections, BAC Lightning is indispensable reading matter to enthusiast and professional alike.
