{detailed description}This is the first in-depth story of the world's first supersonic fighter, the North American F-100 Super Sabre. Developed as a fighter-interceptor, later converted to a tactical nuclear-armed strike fighter, the Super Sabre was eventually proven in the crucible of the Vietnam war as an effective and highly lethal fighter-bomber.
In this detailed study, author David A Anderton presents the results of two years of research, tracking down dusty archival records, interviewing pilots and airmen, and assembling private photographic records to bring readers much unpublished material. The full story of the Super Sabre's controversial design, development, and testing is revealed in these pages for the first time.
The book takes you into the cockpit of an F-100 on a strike against Viet Cong positions, flying at low level on a Misty FAC mission, or 'trolling for SAM' as a Wild Weasel I. It shows how the Air National Guard took a castoff aircraft and made it into an efficient weapons system, setting new marks for operational readiness and effectiveness. And it traces the 'Hun's' service with the air forces of Denmark, France, Nationalist China and Turkey.
NORTH AMERICAN F-100 SUPER SABRE is illustrated with more than 160 black-and-white photographs, many published here for the first time, and 12 photographs in full colour. Appendices present performance and other statistical data, as well as summaries of major modifications of the F-100, such as the RF-100A, F-100D ZEL, and the F-107A.
