This is the fascinating story of the discovery and subsequent unearthing of a Second World War Hurricane fighter aircraft.
The book has two main parts. The first covers the author's introduction as a young schoolboy to a small piece of wreckage in the Essex coastal marshes. His early inquisitiveness leads to identification of the aircraft type and several years later to a recovery operation which retrieves the substantial remains from their muddy resting place.
After a period of further investigation into the remains' identity, together with some initial preservation work, the aircraft is finally put on display at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon.
The second part of the book attempts to recreate the sequence of events during the raid which led to the aircraft's loss. It draws together as much of the story as possible using eye witness accounts from the ground and in the air, together with surviving documentary evidence. Both sections are fully illustrated using a wide range of contemporary photographic material.
One Hurricane — One Raid is an historical record to complement a major exhibit at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon. It is a marvellous account of one man's involvement with history, his piecing together of aspects of aerial conflict and local history; a juxtaposition of archaeology and aviation historical research. This book will appeal not only to aviation enthusiasts, but also to all who have an interest in our past.
