Bearing a grimly appropriate code name, Operation Gomorrah was RAF Bomber Command's attempt in 1943 to obliterate Hamburg, Germany's great northern port city. The bombers returned night after night, pulverising what was already rubble, whipping up the most terrible firestorm of the Second World War and creating a holocaust so appalling that would-be rescuers could only watch aghast from outside the city. An estimated 42,000 people died—blasted, burned or suffocated to death—and 22 square kilometres of the city were incinerated.
Ex-Bomber Command navigator and author of Pathfinder Force, Gordon Musgrove has written the most detailed account yet of this the most awful expression of Sir Arthur Harris's area-bombing policy. Drawing on Allied and German reports and eyewitness accounts, he describes and analyses the cataclysm with the dispassion of a historian and the authority of a veteran. Illustrated with 32 pages of photographs and over 30 maps and diagrams, Operation Gomorrah is a timely reminder of what even conventional bombing could do to a European city.
