{detailed description}Operation Manna/Chowhound describes one of the most emotional moments in the war history of The Netherlands. Between 29th April and 8th May 1945 Lancaster bombers and Flying Fortresses dropped almost 11,000 tons of food over ten drop zones inside Fortress Holland, at that time still occupied by the Germans.
The food drops - in Holland generally known by the British name Manna - saved a great part of the population in the large cities from starvation. This was no easy missions: the RAF flew over 3,100 missions while the USAAF, calling the operation Chowhound, flew more than 2,200 missions. Few people will realize that initially the British started the food supply drops with great suspicion. They did not believe the German promise not to fire upon the aircraft.
However when the air crew witnessed the great joy of the Dutch and when they saw that indeed the Germans had kept their promise, their suspicion changed to great enthusiasm. During the following days many little parcels came down, apart from the 'official' supplies: the air crew's own flying rations.
Operation Manna/Chowhound pays hommage to the thousands of Britons, Canadians, New Zealanders, Poles, Australians and Americans who helped to prevent a catastrophe.
In gratitude this book has been dedicated to ten Americans who lost their lives during the drops when their aircraft crashed into the North Sea. Remembering them, we thank all: air crew, technicians, drivers and soldiers who loaded the foodstuffs, flew and dropped it.
