{detailed description}Short Brothers of Belfast is a name that resounds down the long history of British Aviation. It is as old as the Wright brothers themselves, for the three Short brothers, Horace, Eustace and Oswald, justifiably could claim to be 'the first manufacturers of aircraft in the world' when they won the first-ever contract from the Wrights to build the latter's Flyer in Britain, on the Isle of Sheppey.
Having begun as balloonists, in which past-time they excelled, the three Short brothers turned to powered flying in the first decade of this century, and never looked back. Indeed, it was they who turned the Isle of Sheppey into one of the great cradles of British aviation, rivalling Brooklands and Farnborough itself. There, the long history of British naval aviation was effectively born as a result of Horace's own interest in that field and because of the proximity of the sea to the brothers' factory.
Through many vicissitudes — at one time, in order to survive after the First World War, the company built bus bodies, and after the Second World War even milk churns and carpet sweepers — the company has survived. Today, it is one of the most famous and honoured names in world aviation. This is the story of the company and its founders, told very much in their own words, and as they and their successors saw and have seen it through the years.
