{detailed description}Bob Braham was Britain's most decorated fighter pilot, being awarded the triple DSO, triple DFC, and the AFC. With 29 combat victories, he achieved more success in night fighting than almost any RAF pilot of the Second World War.
Joining the RAF in 1938 at the age of 18 he was posted to No 29 Squadron at Debden and in the autumn of 1939 the squadron converted to a night fighter role. Fretting at the squadron's inactive role, Braham did not gain his first victory until August 1940 when the squadron was at Digby in Lincolnshire. From then on he was constantly in flying action from Ford and West Mailing with Guy Gibson. In command of 141 Squadron at Predannack and then at Wittering, the squadron was selected to fly operations with the Serrate device, and was duty bound to fly whenever the bombers went out. Braham won his chief fame for his individual night intrusion sorties, but he was also involved in the Peenemiinde raid and in the fight against the V1 and V2s. Battle fatigued by 1943, he insisted on continuing operational flying although by then a Group Staff officer, and in June 1944 was shot down, becoming a POW.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Basil Embry writes in his foreword that he never met anyone to surpass Braham in sheer aggressive fighting spirit. In this first-class autobiography the dynamism of his character is fully reflected.
