{detailed description}The ever-increasing rise in costs for military aeroplanes during the Cold War led to several multinational designs, where costs and development were shared among two or more nations. Among the earliest of these was the collaboration between Dassault-Breguet in France and the British Aircraft Corporation that led to the formation of SEPECAT and the Jaguar.
Designed as a low-cost strike aircraft and advanced trainer with good performance for operations from rough forward airfields, the Jaguar is powered by two Rolls-Royce/ Turbomeca Adour turbofans and is capable of carrying 10,000lb of weapons. First deliveries were to the French Armée de I'Air in 1973 and to the RAF in 1974, by which time its planned advanced trainer role had been passed over in favour of ground attack.
The career of the Jaguar may have passed almost unnoticed were it not for the Gulf War of 1990. Jaguars from France and the UK were in the forefront of the battles and proved themselves to be highly capable and effective weapons. This also led to them playing a leading role in the events surrounding the Bosnian crisis.
Historian Andy Evans tells the full story of the Jaguar in this Crowood Aviation Series book, from the political wranglings that led to its design, through its development and operational use to its current role as an integral part of the air forces of Britain, France and several other countries.
