{detailed description}Sepik Pilot is the story of a man and aeroplanes ; of desperate days in the Western Desert during World War Two, where the Tomahawks and Kittyhawks of young Australian fighter pilots fought the Germans and Italians in their Messerschmitts and Macchis; of New Guinea, and the birth and death of a tiny air charter company.
It is the personal story of Wing Commander Bobby Gibbes, D.S.O., D.F.C., and his air company, Gibbes Sepik Airways. It tells of deeds of daring in the wild New Guinea mountains; of patrol officers and their work in the bush, of disasters, tragedies and triumphs.
It is the story of the bush pilots of post war New Guinea, of their wonderful exploits, of the vital part they played in the exploration, pacification and settlement of the Sepik and the Central Highlands.
But above all it is Gibbes' story; the indomitable Sepik Pilot who started with one tiny Auster monoplane and built up a remarkable airline, the very lifeline of the most remote of the outstations of New Guinea.
