{detailed description}The bitter year of 1942 with all its sacrifices was over. As the New Year dawned it seemed that at last the tide of war was turning in the Allies' favour. There was no doubt on either side that 1943 would be the decisive year, and therefore Churchill, Roosevelt and their Chiefs of Staff met in Casablanca to determine strategy for this new phase of the war. One of the decisions reached at the Casablanca Conference was to unite the strategic bombing arms of the RAF and the USAAF to form a single force whose task was, 'the progressive destruction and dislocation of the German military, industrial and economic system and the undermining of the morale of the German people to a point where their capacity for armed resistance is fatally weakened.'
Robert Jackson examines in detail the effects of this directive and assesses the achievements of the Strategic Bombing Offensive from 1943 to 1945.
