{detailed description}In the 25th anniversary year of the death of Sir Sydney Camm, this book brings together rare material on the creation of the Hawker Hurricane, the fighter that became the salvation of the U.K. in 1940. Hurricanes shot down more Luftwaffe aircraft than all the other defences combined in our 'narrow margin'.
The chapters comprise material by Sydney Camm himself and by men who worked at various times in or for Camm's fighter design team at Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, U.K. Much of this material has not previously been published.
Besides recording pre-war aeronautical history in the words of those who helped make it, the book also surveys the entire 41 years' leadership of Camm at Kingston. It provides, for the first time in print, insight into and appreciation of the personal and professional qualities of a man whose lifework resulted in the building of over 27,000 aircraft, and whose career and accomplishments will remain forever unequalled in fighter aircraft design.
