The late Dave McIntosh will long be remembered for this terrifying, hilarious, bittersweet account of his experiences in the RCAF during the Second World War. As the starboard-seat navigator for a Jewish-American Mosquito pilot hell-bent on single-handedly defeating the Nazis, McIntosh was well placed to appreciate the harsh realities of war. Flying together in the cramped cockpit of an aircraft made entirely of wood, they successfully completed 41 intruder operations with No. 418 RCAF (City of Edmonton) Squadron, a monumental achievement for which they were both awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Along the way they survived heavy flak, landed on one engine as often as two, mistakenly flew over target sites as bombs rained down from above, and nearly hit the deck because gas tanks were not switched.
In this absorbing and entertaining book, McIntosh's irreverent wit serves to underscore the tragedy and inhumanity of war. He paints a rich canvas of what life was like for a young Canadian flung into a world of intense drama tempered with uproarious misadventures. Complementing McIntosh's text in this new edition is an informative, scene-setting foreword by David L. Bashow and an evocative second section of photographs of wartime 418 Squadron life, both of which add a further level of perspective to these classic Canadian war memoirs.
