{detailed description}The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight has brought enjoyment and nostalgia to many millions with their appearances both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
Initially equipped with three Spitfire Mk. l9s and Hurricane LF363, at Biggin Hill, the flight has moved over the years via Martlesham Heath and Coltishall to its present base at Coningsby, Lincolnshire, where the visitor centre forms a major tourist attraction.
The aircraft of the flight include the flagship Lancaster PA474, Hurricanes, Spitfires of various marks, and a Dakota. It has also operated a variety of support aircraft.
In this tribute, the history of the flight and the individual aircraft are described in detail, as are the engineering overhaul and rebuilding activities, plus mobile and base support.
Also described are the activities of a typical display season - the planning, crew training, pre-display briefing, the display itself, aircraft positioning, pilots and volunteers.
This copiously illustrated book is a fine testament to a unit which, since its creation in 1957, has become a national institution.
