{detailed description}This is the story of the steps taken between 1935 and 1940 to prepare the RAF to perform three principal but very different roles: patrol the oceans; defend Britain against air attack; and to take the war to the enemy. It is also the story of the essential technologies that had to be improved or developed from scratch; 1,000 horsepower engines, eight-gun fighters, long-range heavy bombers, gun turrets, radar and many others. The 'Phoney War', between September 1939 and May 1940, gave the RAF time in which to complete a large part of the expansion programme. Fighter Command was given time in which to perfect interception techniques but Bomber Command was still to learn some costly lessons.
