A stunning collection of colour photographs entitled "The Mighty Eighth in Colour" was received with great acclaim when first published. Roger Freeman is well known worldwide as the leading authority on the US Eighth Air Force in Europe during World War Two, but retains an active interest in Royal Air Force operations over this period, and this superb book is the result of his interest.
Colour photography of RAF aircraft, personnel and bases is even rarer than USAAF cover during the years 1939-45, since civilian colour film stocks were next to impossible to obtain, and only a very few official photographers were able to use the limited amounts of Kodachrome colour film that was around in wartime Britain. Despite these highly restrictive conditions, Roger Freeman has collected more than 300 images — an astonishing wealth of splendid colour material, some of it surprisingly from US servicemen who had easier access to colour film and photographed any stray RAF machine forced down on USAAF airfields. The photographs presented attempt as thorough a coverage or machines and personnel as possible, including those of Fighter, Bomber and coastal commands, overseas theatres, with reconnaissance and transport types and even machines in manufacture and maintenance.
With detailed explanatory captions throughout, this is an outstanding effort, gloriously recording the Royal Air Force operations in World War Two in images never before assembled in such numbers, and of such quality.
