{detailed description}When women first took to the air in the pioneer days of flight, their efforts were frequently greeted with scorn and ridicule. Flying was seen as very much of a male preserve, and many were determined to keep it so. From the late 1920s onwards, however, this assumption was successfully challenged by an international group of women fliers, who took on their male counterparts on their own ground, demanding to be treated as fully-fledged professionals rather than as publicity-seeking amateurs. Their exploits, particularly in the field of long-distance flying, captured the imagination and headlines of the world; but their real viewpoint was summed up by Britain's Amy Johnson — 'Amy, Wonderful Amy' —when she wrote 'I do not want it to be unusual that women should do things.' The surface glitter, the physical achievement and the inner aspirations are the three themes of THE SKY'S THE LIMIT. Starting with the pioneer days before the First World War, the book traces the careers of the leading women fliers of the 1920s and 1930s, and, in addition, examines the role of women pilots in the Second World War. It ends by examining the challenging question of why flying still remains very much a male preserve today.
