{detailed description}Disbanded at Wyton in 1982 as a Canberra photo-reconnaissance squadron, 39 has had a varied history, told here by a former Squadron member who has researched extensively in official records, published accounts and by many personal interviews.
The Squadron was established in 1916 with B.E.2s for Zeppelin defence, and took Bristol Fighters to France in 1918. The 1920s saw 39 with DH.9As as a day bomber unit, first in the UK and then on the North-West Frontier of India where the unit remained until 1939, with Wapitis, then Harts and finally the Blenheims with which it moved to Singapore. Second World War activities were in Aden, then Egypt/Libya, using Blenheims, Marylands, Beauforts on highly successful shipping strikes and Beaufighters, finishing the war in Italy with Marauders. A short spell in the Sudan and re-equipment with Mosquitos preceded disbandment in 1946 but in 1948, 39 reformed with Tempests at Khartoum, passing on to Mosquitos over Suez, Meteor night-fighters 1953-58 and Canberras from then on.
The book includes first-hand accounts from former Squadron members, and is illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs, and maps. Appendices detail operations, aircraft used etc.
