{detailed description}This third volume of the series rounds off the histories of the British fighting aircraft used or designed during the 191418 war. It is predominantly a record of Sopwith and Vickers aircraft, picking up at the remarkable Hippo the history of the numerous Sopwith types that was begun in Volume 2. Thus this volume includes the alpha and omega of British fighters of the first world war: the Vickers F.B.5 of 1914, which equipped the first fighter squadron of any air force in the world, and the Sopwith Snapper of 1918, which might have gone into production had the war continued into 1919.
As in Volumes 1 and 2, so in this third volume the fruits of recent and continuing research are reflected in many of the aircraft histories, and new information relating to such types as the Sopwith Dolphin, Vickers F.B.5 and Vickers F.B.26 is here presented for the first time. And again the illustrations include many photographs that have not previously been published, together with general-arrangement drawings of which some are the first delineations of their subjects ever presented.
