{detailed description}The evacuation by the RAF of nearly 600 people — the majority of them `neutral' women and children — from the tensely troubled capital of Afghanistan in 1929 to British India is one of the most spectacular achievements in the history of aviation. With incredible panache and skill the pilots, flying mainly Vickers Victorias (deriving from the planes of the first world war and even at normal altitudes limited to a cruising speed of 90 mph and twenty passengers) braved the perils of the mountains, the winter weather and the risks of forced landing, and accomplished their objective with only one casualty among their charges—a woman who in her hurry injured herself by walking into a propeller. Wings Over Kabul gives a vivid picture of the dangers faced by the families trapped in the Legations and the anxieties of those responsible for their safe passage to India where, as Air Officer Commanding RAF in India, Anne Baker's father Air Vice Marshal Sir Geoffrey Salmond directed the airlift.
The successful rescue wrote a new page in the history of the aeroplane—it was the first airlift ever, the precursor of all such operations from Berlin to Saigon. Air Chief Marshal Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman's vivid first-hand account as a pilot in this insufficiently known epic will assure this book of a place on every aviation enthusiast's shelf.
