{detailed description}In 1980, when Saab-Scania decided to manufacture a civil passenger aircraft for about thirty passengers, they entered one of the largest industrial projects a Swedish company had ever invested in.
The project was so large that they needed a partner. Fairchild Industries were in the United States. They too, just like Saab-Scania, wanted to construct a new passenger aircraft, but did not dare without a partner. The investment would be gigantic. The money had to be invested on a long-term basis and the profitability was uncertain. Marcus Wallenberg became personally involved in the matter.
Fairchild Industries' chairman of the board was the eccentric Ed Uhl — the man who invented the bazooka...
The story of the 340 is the tale of how an aircraft is developed; from the initial simple sketches to the maiden flight; from the test to the certification and marketing. Here is everything for those interested in aviation. But it is also the story of the people behind the project. It is the tale of power struggles and culture clashes. Of success and setbacks and drama. Finally there was the divorce.
Saab-Scania was left alone with the whole project and Fairchild withdrew to repair its sorry financial state. The story of the aircraft SF 340 which became the Saab 340 is the tale of committed people who worked around the clock for their aircraft, but it is also the tale of fearless airline presidents with visions. Exciting entrepreneurs, confident test pilots and strong-willed civil servants. The book has grown from hundreds of hours of recorded interviews and gives a unique look behind the scenes at a large industrial project. Tomy Hjorth, head of Saab Aircraft Division's Commercial Aircraft sector, and all his fellow-workers both in Sweden and the United States, can be content. The venture has succeeded. Under his management, the sales figures continue to increase steadily.
The aircraft made record sales in 1987, 42 firm orders in one year. 1988 promises to be even better, thirty aircraft sold during a few hot summer months .. .
