{detailed description}Colin Cruddas grew up on the Yorkshire coast during the wartime years. With aircraft constantly flying overhead he developed an active interest in aeroplanes and went on to pursue a lifetime career in the aviation industry in the UK, the United States and South Africa. He worked for iconic companies such as Fairey, Blackburn, Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and the British Aircraft Corporation, and associated with many key personalities of the era. His recollections chronicle the significant advances made in aviation and include the leap of faith in technology that saw Concorde defeat the Americans in the race to produce a practical supersonic airliner. All too often procurement problems and technical failures have made for dramatic headlines and these, too, are subjected to much critical comment. In setting out to avoid technical terminology, the author ensures his book will appeal to all those whose memories embrace the sound barrier-breaking years. Mixed with events of a more personal nature, often coated with whimsical humour, this engaging history evocatively captures the rise and demise of Britain's aircraft industry in the post-war period.
