{detailed description}The author's flying career spanned thirty-four years of peace and war, and in this entertaining book he has recalled many episodes which recapture the excitement and adventure, perils and pitfalls that flying has brought to him. He begins with his early days in pre-war aviation, where the pilot had to be master of both his machine and the elements, days which produced a unique cameraderie amongst the aviators, and goes on to recall the perilous days of the Second World War and in particular the Battle of Britain during which he was stationed at Westhampnett, and his later years in the Middle East and in Malta when the island was still under constant attack. After the war, scientific developments changed the face of aviation, but as his last episode `Jetting into Trouble' shows, even the best of planes needs a good pilot. As he had found from his very first flight in a model Avro, every flight was special, in that it had something, perhaps funny, perhaps dangerous, to make it a little different from all the others.
In the author's own words: 'Some of the flights were frightening and dangerous, but most had their moments of comedy too and, as they took place during the halcyon days before the robots took over, I hereby hope to share some of the enjoyment with many others who did not, like me, have the luck to be there.'
