{detailed description}John Isaacs was born in 1920, in Southampton. He attended the local Western District School, and was awarded a Scholarship to King Edward VI School. He joined Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd in August 1937, and served his apprenticeship as an aircraft engineer. He was subsequently employed as a draughtsman on a variety of work and reached Junior Management status. He left the company in 1958. after twenty one years service, shortly before the demise of Supermarine as an aircraft manufacturer.
After a year at the Garnett Training College, he spent twenty one years as a lecturer in further education at Southampton Technical College from which he retired in 1980.
During the war he was a member of the Royal Observer Corps as a part-time post observer, later becoming Post Instructor (leading Observer) serving until 1958.
John learnt to fly with the Wiltshire School of Flying, at High Post, in 1946. He joined the Hampshire Aeroplane Club in 1951 and was involved in the construction of post-war Currie
Wot biplanes, and the unsuccessful twin-engined Halcyon. Later he designed, built, and flew two original aeroplanes based on a scaled down Hawker Fury, and a Spitfire, and these two famous miniatures have inspired many others to build similar machines, using John's own plans.
He has also helped with the construction of many other types of aircraft - most notably a full size Hawker Fury replica. He joined the Ultra Light Aircraft Association early in 1947, soon after its formation, and he remains a member of its successor, the Popular Flying Association, to this day. John has held a private pilot's licence continuously from 1946 to the present, and currently flies a Chipmunk with the Wessex Flying Group.
This delightful book is an extraordinary mixture, capturing as it does the carefree atmosphere of post-war club flying. For the technically minded it gives a fascinating insight into the complexities and skills of designing and constructing aeroplanes.
