{detailed description}Although the name of the Aircraft Manufacturing Company, often shortened to Airco, is not the best known of World War One aircraft builders, its products were impossible to ignore. The D.H.2 was the fighter that helped turn the tide against the German forward-firing aircraft such as the Fokker E.III; the licence-built Farman Longhorns and Shorthorns and the later D.H.6 trained many hundreds of airmen; the D.H.5 was a successful ground-attack aircraft; and the D.H.10 was a fine twinengined bomber whose performance would have been a great asset had the war lasted any longer.
It was, however, two day bombers that set the company apart. The D.H.4 and its developed versions, the D.H.9 and D.H.9a, were truly innovative and ground-breaking aircraft, combining speed, load-carrying and defensive capability in a rugged and easily-maintained aeroplane, although the D.H.9 was plagued by engine troubles. Such was their success that the Royal Air Force used the D.H.9a for many years after the war and it served as the basis for several other designs. In the United States, the D.H.4 formed the backbone of the Army Air Service's bombing capability well into the 1920s and a developed version helped open up the continent as a mailplane.
Under the patronage of George Holt Thomas, a young Geoffrey de Havilland designed the aircraft and sowed the seeds of what was to become one of the twentieth century's most innovative aircraft companies, producing the superlative Mosquito during World War Two, an aeroplane whose roles were as varied as those of its predecessors.
Accomplished aviation historian Mick Davis tells the story of Airco in this detailed and well-researched addition to the Crowood Aviation Series. Fully illustrated with a fine selection of photographs, it should form an essential part of any World War One enthusiast's library.
