{detailed description}foreword
This volume is a pictorial record of thirty years of airliner development, from 1946 to 1976. This is not a particularly long period in aviation history, but the advances made have been considerable in both aircraft and power unit design, as well as in safety and passenger accommodation. The immediate post-war years saw the reappearance in civil markings of the superb Douglas DC-3, which carried twenty-eight passengers at around 170 mph. Its modern successor, the DC-8, seats two hundred and fifty-one and flies at 580 m.p.h., while the mighty Boeing 747 can transport nearly five hundred people across the Atlantic at 600 m.p.h. in comfort approaching that of a moderate-sized cruise liner, complete with cinemas, bars and restaurants. A vital part in this progress has been the work of the engine designers and manufacturers, who progressively increased the power of the piston engine to its limits, then introduced the propeller turbine and the pure jet engine. With all this, civil aviation in the transport field has developed far beyond the dreams of its pioneers, and is now an accepted fact of our daily lives, rather than the adventure it once was.
