{detailed description}Maurice Allward records the history of a unique period in the story of aviation.
For a brief period of forty years, the flying boat and its smaller counterpart, the float plane, were a familiar part of the flying scene.
Without the need for runways, the great flying boats pioneered the air routes of the world in peace, and roved the oceans protecting shipping in time of war.
It was a float plane, the famous Supermarine S6B, which won the Schneider Trophy outright for Britain and proved to be the test-bed for the magnificent Spitfire of World War II.
Maurice Allward, himself a pioneer in this era, tells the story with great enthusiasm and illustrates the text with many rare photographs.
