{detailed description}Alliott Verdon Roe designed and built his own Triplane in which he made the first sustained flight by an all-British aircraft in 1909. He was equally famous for the ubiquitous Avro 504 of World War I, but he left the firm to which he had given his name long before it started producing the legendary Anson, Lancaster, Lincoln, Shackleton and Vulcan of more recent days. Nearly 200 Avro variants are illustrated spanning the years 1908 to 1963 when Avro ended its independent existence.
