{detailed description}This is the first biography to be written of Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory who was described in his obituary in The Times as 'one of the most capable and talented air commanders of the war'.
It is an account of one airman's very distinguished career, a man who did not survive the war and who consequently could not give his own account of the story — although happily some of his own writing survives.
Known throughout the Royal Air Force as 'L-M', he commanded one of the two main Fighter Groups during the Battle of Britain. With his subordinate Douglas Bader he was involved in the still-running controversy about the use of the `Big Wing', a tactic fiercely opposed by Keith Park, commander of Eleven Group.
He later rose to be C-in-C Fighter Command and commanded the Allied air attack on Dieppe in 1942. On D-Day `L-M' commanded the greatest air armada in history. His boss was Eisenhower, his army opposite number was Montgomery.
In November 1944 he was flying to the Far East in order to command the combined British and American Air Forces in the war against Japan when his aircraft crashed and he was killed.
BIG WING fills an important gap in the literature of the Second World War and hopefully will help to restore Leigh-Mallory to his rightful place in the history of the war.
